SEASONS AND PHENOMENA IN FINNISH LAPLAND

Finnish Lapland is a unique destination with many seasons, nature phenomenons and beautiful landscapes. Come and have a memorable holiday in Lapland!

The Northern Lights

The best time to spot the Northern lights in Lapland is from early September (sometimes already in the late August) to the end of March.

Northen lights is a natural light display in the sky, seen in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Auroras or Northern Lights are caused by collisions between electrically charged particles released from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere and collide with gases such as oxygen and nitrogen.

Auroras can appear in many vivid colors, although green is the most common. Colors such as red, yellow, green, blue and violet are also seen occasionally. The auroras can appear in many forms, from small patches of light that appear out of nowhere to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an incredible glow.

To spot the Northern Lights you should be away from the light pollution and the sky should be clear because they are not visible through most types of clouds. Polar night gives a good chance to see the Northern Lights and usually the best time of the night to spot auroras is between 10pm to 2am.

Polar night, "Kaamos"

The polar night occurs when the night lasts for more than 24 hours. This occurs only inside the polar circles. The two-month long polar night (kaamos) begins in November when the sun no longer rises above the horizon. The darkness takes different shades of blue, violet and purple and the snow reflects the shades so the scenery looks truly like a winter wonderland.

May also is the time, when reindeer calves see the light of day for the first time, born as the same size of a cat, these cuties get up into their feet just a few hours after being born. After couple days they run faster than people.

MIDNIGHT SUN

Midnight sun is a phenomenon that is total opposite of the polar night, this occurs during the summer months and the sun is up for 24 hours if the weather conditions are favorable. This phenomenon is also connected to the polar circles. It is a quite unique experience to go on a hike in the middle of the night when there is still the same amount of daylight.
